Enhancing Animal Care Quality – Taipei City Animal Protection Office Sends Staff to Animal Medical Assistant Training Programs
Since the Ministry of Agriculture promulgated the Regulations Governing Certification of Animal Medical Assistants and Accreditation of Certification Bodies in 2023, certified animal medical assistants have begun to emerge from 2025 onward. To enhance the quality of care for animals housed in animal shelters, the Taipei City Animal Protection Office has dispatched staff to participate in animal medical assistant training programs to strengthen the professional competencies of animal care personnel and further promote animal welfare. The Taipei City Animal Protection Office stated that, in order to improve the quality of animal medical services nationwide, the Ministry of Agriculture issued the Regulations Governing Certification of Animal Medical Assistants and Accreditation of Certification Bodies in 2023 and, in 2024, accredited the Taiwan Veterinary Medical Associations as the certification body. Since 2025, individuals have gradually obtained certification as animal medical assistants. To provide better care for elderly or ill shelter animals, the Taipei City Animal Protection Office has proactively arranged for staff to attend animal medical assistant training courses. The training content includes basic veterinary medicine, pet care and nursing techniques, pharmaceutical support tasks, and animal welfare. This is intended to enhance relevant professional skills and provide stronger support to veterinarians. Members of the public interested in pursuing careers related to animal care may visit the Animal Medical Assistant Certification Platform of the Taiwan Veterinary Medical Associations (https://reurl.cc/lYqZo9) to check available courses. The Taipei City Animal Protection Office further noted that, under the Veterinarians Act, any person who has not obtained veterinarian qualifications or does not meet the statutory requirements and who unlawfully performs veterinary practice may be fined between NT$100,000 and NT$500,000. Those who wish to become animal medical assistants and contribute to animal medical care must complete the designated training courses and examinations, obtain certification from an accredited certification body, receive a certificate of qualification, complete registration, and obtain an identification badge. Only then may they assist in performing veterinary duties under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian at a veterinary medical institution.
