During an inspection trip to the Feitsui Reservoir on August 5, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin reminded residents to save water to prepare for possible drought. While the current water level can sustain demand for two months, reducing water usage will allow existing supply to last longer.
The mayor pointed out that the city will start restricting water use once the level of the reservoir hits 130 meters. As of August 5, there water level remains at 148.84 meters. Taking into account the daily needs of Taipei City and parts of Taipei County, he expects that regular water supply can be sustained for approximately two months.
He pointed out that the rainfall in northern Taiwan between January and July this year has dropped by 20 percent compared to 2008.
According to the Feitsui Reservoir Administration, it is possible that the approaching typhoon will bring rainfall to the water collection area.
Based on past records, rainfall in the northern region of the island is likely to increase as seasonal northeastern winds enter the area starting September.
