The audience roared in excitement when Taiwanese athlete Lu Ching-feng defeated his Venezuelan opponent in the finals of the karate competition on September 8, winning another gold medal for Chinese Taipei at the 2009 Summer Deaflympics in Taipei.
In addition to Lu’s gold, his teammate Lin Wen-fang also made it to the finals in the women’s 50-68 kg Karate after bringing down her Russian opponent 3:1. However, she was defeated 1:3 by her Japanese opponent, bringing home the silver medal.
Mayor Hau Lung-bin attended the karate matches held at the Nangang Sports Center to cheer for the athletes. He also visited the pole vaulting competition to cheer for Taiwanese medal hopeful An Ching-lung.
An, one of the spokesperson for this year’s Deaflympics and the winner of the decathlon at the 2001 Summer Deaflympics in Rome, remarked that this will be his last Deaflympics. He hopes that he will be able to set a new record for both himself and the games, going out on a high note.
He will also be competing in the athletic decathlon on September 11.
As of 6 PM of September 8, the Chinese Taipei national team has won five gold, three silver, and three bronze medals.
