Mayor Promotes Blue Highway, River Revitalization
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, Mayor Hau Lung-bin joined 150 students from Guandu Elementary School and their parents on a trip along the Blue Highway on April 22. The group boarded the Great River Queen for a 90-minute-long ride. Through the field trip, the city government seeks to enhance the participants’ knowledge on the natural environment along the Tamsui River and to promote the results of river revitalization. Hau remarked that the City’s efforts have achieved an important milestone – water quality of Tamsui River is at its best for the past three decades. There are clear indications of improving conditions, including the absence of floating garbage and unpleasant odor and – most importantly – the growth of the fish population. Citing a report from the Environmental Protection Bureau, the mayor pointed out that fish species inhabiting the Tamsui River increased from 48 species to 89 species between 2007 and 2009. He jokingly suggested that the city government should hold an award ceremony for the individual who can expand the list of fish species to 90. The mayor stressed that the water quality of Tamsui River is on par with London’s Thames and Singapore’s Singapore River. He recommended that the public should make a trip along Blue Highway when they have the opportunity. In the day, visitors can explore the sights and sceneries at Guandu Park and Huazhong Bridge. The view from the riverside is even more appealing at night.
