Taipei City Announces 3 Riverside Locations for Setting Off Firecrackers on Chinese New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day

Map of riverside park allowing firecrackers during CNY As usual, parts of the riverside park will be open for setting off fireworks and firecrackers during Chinese New Year this year. According to the Taipei Hydraulic Engineering Office (HEO), 3 riverside locations will be open on Chinese New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, while only one location will be open from day 2 to day 5 of the Chinese New Year’s holiday during regular hours. Setting off firecrackers in closed spaces of the riverside park is strictly prohibited; those who break the law and ignore warnings will be fined NT$2,400-6,000 depending on the severity of the crime.

The HEO explains that the 3 areas in the riverside park open on Chinese New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day (January 24 and 25) are Fuhe (Xizhou) Riverside Park (approx. 100m upstream of Fuhe Bridge, excluding the area beneath Fuhe Bridge), Fuan Riverside Park (excluding the sidewalk and boardwalk), and Guandu Riverside Park (excluding bikeway, boardwalk, and sidewalk). Firecrackers may be set off around the clock.

From day 2 to day 5 of the Chinese New Year’s holiday (January 26-29), permitted firecracker setting off hours resume to regular weekday hours (08:00-22:00), and only designated areas within Fuhe (Xizhou) Riverside Park are allowed. Setting off firecrackers in other areas and outside the permitted hours will not be allowed.

The HEO will reinforce the patrol of the riverside park during the Chinese New Year holiday in order to maintain tourist safety and the cleanliness of the area. Furthermore, the public is urged to only light firecrackers in designated areas of the riverside park and within the hours permitted. If citizens are found setting off firecrackers in closed areas or during closed hours, the HEO inspectors will provide them with a verbal warning, and if they persist to break the law, they will be fined NT$2,400-6,000 in accordance with the Taipei City Park Management Ordinance.

The agency pointed out that the regular firecracker setting off hours announced at the designated areas are enforced according to the “Areas, Scope, and Hours for Prohibiting Peace-Disturbing Activities in Taipei City”. In addition, Taipei City Government’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) also produced eco-friendly and smokeless firecracker music for the public to download (DEP homepage/Theme Area/Video Area/Eco-friendly smokeless firecrackers; website https://goo.gl/4sAvct).

In a bid to conserve energy and reduce carbon emissions, the HEO recommends the public avoid setting off firecrackers and fireworks as much as possible. If you are setting off firecrackers at the riverside park, please do not target private residences, people, or facilities. After dark, please be considerate of nearby residents and maintain peace in order to avoid disputes. Please take trash with you, do not litter and pollute the environment. Additionally, citizens may only light firecrackers in the designated areas within the 3 aforementioned riverside parks, and setting off firecrackers outside the designated areas will be construed as illegal and clamped down. Please refer to the HEO’s website for further details or check the on-site markings for reference.
