Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the planned pedestrian bridges in Shilin District on July 18. Situated in front of the Shezi Elementary School and the Hulu Elementary School respectively, the two bridges will link the residential areas with nearby riverside space.
Speaking at the event, Hau pointed out that the presence of both the Tamsui River levee and the 40 meter-wide Huanhe North Road have prevented Shezi residents from taking full advantage of the riverside parks. To facilitate access to the riverside, Taipei City Council approved the NT$170 million budget for the construction project, backing the City’s effort to create new passages for pedestrians.
With the new pedestrian bridges, travel between the residential area and the riverside parks will be more comfortable and convenient for both pedestrians and cyclists. In addition, the bridges are expected to serve as new local landmarks upon completion.
Hau also announced that the city government has set aside NT$2.1 billion for the construction of Shezi Bridge. Following the approval of related development plans by the central government, the City is ready to commence the NT$70 billion renovation project on Shezi Island. This proposed project seeks to transform Shezi into a “diamond” along the drainage area of Tamsui River.
