The Department of Economic Development (DED) wrapped up its seed planting and adoption for local elementary school students in June. According to DED officials, the program aims at encourage students to join the renovation of the city’s landscape through planting various plants and flowers.
The project is part of the preparations for the upcoming 2010 Taipei International Flora Expo.
First launched in May, the project attracted young students from 151 education institutions. The seedlings were all given away within a month’s time.
Despite the lack of experience in gardening, the young project participants took on the responsibility of looking after their “green friends”. Members of the faculty, parents of students, and volunteers also actively involved with the quest of beautifying the city’s landscape.
To encourage the students to keep up the good work, DED announced that the young caretakers will have a chance of winning Flora Expo-themed souvenirs at a raffle if they submit pictures of themselves taking care of their plants at the “Taipei Garden City” Website (http://www.2010.org.tw).
