Mayor Attends Thai New Year Celebrations, Thanks Immigrant Workers
Organized by the Department of Labor (DOL), the “Songkran Celebrations: Thailand Culture Festival” kicked off at the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Champs-Elysees in Xinyi District on April 10. Dressed in traditional Thai clothing, Mayor Hau Lung-bin joined revelers at the exciting event.
Speaking before the gathering, Hau credited Thai workers for playing important roles in helping Taipei transform into a well-developed municipality through their involvement in public construction works. He noted that there are over 2,000 Thai workers working in the city. These workers take on a variety of jobs such as construction workers at MRT construction sites; employees of traditional industries; and caretakers for senior citizens.
Their longtime presence made them a part of local society, and the culture of Thailand has been integrated into Taipei’s culture, a city known for its cultural diversity. The mayor pointed out that Thai culture has already taken root in the soil of this island.
As the mayor of Taipei, Hau stressed that it is his responsibility to ensure a happy working environment for all immigrant workers in the city. DOL will implement every possible measures to protect the well-being and rights of these workers. For those who encounter problems, help is readily available from DOL.
In addition to cultural shows, there were also showcases of Buddhist statues, free medical services by Tzu Chi, Thai food fair, and Thai massage service.
