To conduct the decennial population count slated for the end of the year, Taipei City Government announced the formation of the Department of Population and Housing Census (DPHC) on September 1.
Deputy Mayor Lee Yong-ping and Director Lo Chang-nan, head of the Fourth Department under the Executive Yuan’s Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS), together unveiled the plaque inscribed with the name of the agency at the ceremony, symbolizing the start of operations.
Lee pointed out that the census – held once every ten years – is important for gathering demographic data nationwide. Through the census, the city government will be able to learn more about Taipei’s current status from the results collected, utilizing the data for future policy-making reference.
The deputy mayor announced that staff members are expected to visit about 100,000 households during the period of the census. Roughly 1,500 staff members from city agencies – including DBAS, Department of Civil Affairs, and each of the District Offices – will take part in the fieldwork.
According to DGBAS, the census will be carried out between December 26, 2010 and January 22, 2011. Each of the 25 municipal governments will establish its own Department of Population and Housing Census on September 1. The heads of municipal government will double as the leader of these temporary agencies. They will be in charge of overseeing operations for their respective county or city.
To reduce cost and to minimize the impact upon daily life, DGBAS announced that it will not conduct a general census. Instead, the agency will rely on data from multiple public sectors and adopt sampling surveys for computations.
