City and County Leaders Inspect Fuchou Wetland
Mayor Hau Lung-bin, Taipei County Magistrate Chou Hsi-wei, and former Executive Yuan Vice Premier Eric Chu embarked on a tour of the Fuchou Wetland in Taipei County on May 30. The officials examined the results of restoration efforts.
Speaking before the press, Hau remarked that the he is pleased with the progress of river-dredging works and believes that the cooperation between city and county will increase the effectiveness of efforts.
Magistrate Chou presided over a briefing session under Fuchou Bridge, informing the press on the wetland restoration project. He noted that with the two municipalities working hand-in-hand, the water quality of Tamsui River has returned to the level of “light pollution” – the best in three decades. According to Chou, there are reports of sightings of fish along Xinidan River after twenty years.
Chou pointed out that the household sewer connection rate in Taipei County achieved 29 percent under his administration. In addition, the county government also cracked down on unauthorized excavation of sand and gravel, shutting down as many as 32 illegal operations.
At the same time, the county government also expanded the area of constructed wetlands to approximately 300 hectares, creating a clean and accessible riverside environment for residents and a safe eco-haven for wildlife.
