Premiere Visits Underground Railway Construction Site at Nangang Train Station

Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin accompanied Premiere Wu Deng-yih on an inspection tour at Nangang Train Station on October 28. Wu attended a briefing session by the Railway Reconstruction Bureau (RRB) of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications on the progress of the station’s underground railway expansion project.
The premier expressed his gratitude to Taipei City Government for working closely with the central government on this project. He believes that with the “three-in-one” expansion project which will transform the station into a hub for the three major railways (Taiwan Railway, Taiwan High Speed Railway, and MRT).
Wu recalled that in the past, the existence of surface railroads and railroad crossings created a huge burden upon the city’s traffic conditions. Today, with the collaboration between the city government and RRB, railway traffic has entered a new era with the long-term plan of moving the tracks underground, freeing up more room for future development of the city.
Hau believes that the completion of the Nangang Station Underground Railway Expansion Project will stimulate the growth and development of commercial districts in Xinyi District.
According to RRB, the underground railway expansion project is roughly 85 percent complete. The completion date of the project is slated for August of 2011. The completed station will also include a taxi stand and a station for long-distance buses on the ground level.
