Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin announced that with the help of the Chinese Taipei Baseball Association (CTBA), Taipei City has won the bid for the first IBAF Little League World Championship in 2011.
According to the mayor, this will be the first Little League World Championship organized by IBAF. He expects elite teams from over 16 nations will take park in the games slated for the summer of next year.
Hau expressed his gratitude to IBAF Executive Committee member Tom Peng for his support, allowing Taipei City to host the international baseball tournament in the coming year. The city government will also work with CTBA to carry out upgrades and adjustments at the Tienmu Baseball Stadium, making the facility suitable for little league games. He also promised that the city government will open up the fields in Xinsheng Park and riverside parks for practices and games.
Peng noted that Taipei City Government has been very supportive of baseball in recent years. It has also hosted a number of international baseball events, including the Baseball World Cup in 2001 and 2007 respectively. The recent LA Dodgers exhibition matches provided the city government a great opportunity to overhaul the Tienmu Baseball Stadium, transforming the facility into a venue fit for Major League Baseball games.
After initial inspections of the stadium, IBAF declared that the venue will be ready for little league games following minor modifications. The conclusion strengthened the bid submitted by the city government.
