Rooting Disaster Prevention Education in Schools: Connecting Families and Communities to Build a Safe and Resilient City
To enhance public awareness of disaster prevention and community emergency response capabilities, the 4th District of the Taipei City Fire Department partnered with Private Yu-Hua Senior High School to jointly host the "Beitou District Community Disaster Prevention Carnival" during the school’s anniversary celebrations. By inviting students, teachers, parents, and community members to participate in interactive disaster prevention experiences and scenario-based learning, the event promoted proper concepts of fire safety, disaster prevention, and emergency evacuation, establishing a correct understanding of "Universal Disaster Prevention and Prior Prevention". Core Philosophy: Rooting, Extending, and Shared Learning The Fire Department stated that the event centered on the core concept of "rooting disaster prevention education in schools, extending it into families, and promoting shared learning throughout the community". The goal is to strengthen disaster prevention education from the grassroots level, ensuring that students are not only learners but also seeds and bridges for promoting safety awareness within their families and neighborhoods. This brings proper concepts from schools into households and further into local communities to strengthen self-preparedness and urban resilience. Interactive Disaster Prevention Activities The event featured several interactive disaster prevention booths and hands-on experiences, including: ⚫ Emergency Medical Care: CPR and AED hands-on training. ⚫ Scenario Simulations: VR-based fire evacuation and earthquake response experiences. ⚫ Equipment Operation: Water safety education and indoor fire hydrant demonstrations. ⚫ Fire Prevention: Promotion and education regarding residential fire alarms. Community Engagement and School Contribution The Fire Department pointed out that Yu-Hua Senior High School has long been deeply engaged in local education and community participation in the Beitou District. Integrating disaster prevention outreach with the school anniversary celebration not only helps students establish correct concepts from an early age but also encourages parental involvement. This allows disaster prevention awareness to extend from the campus to households and expand into the community, creating a collaborative effect for disaster prevention promotion. Electrical Safety: The "5 Don’ts and 1 No" Principle According to the Fire Department’s 2025 fire statistics, electrical factors are the leading cause of fires. The Department reminds the public to follow the "5 Don’ts and 1 No" principle when using electrical appliances and extension cords: ⚫ Do not overload electrical circuits. ⚫ Do not bundle or tie wires. ⚫ Do not leave unused appliances plugged in (unplug when not in use). ⚫ Do not use damaged or dirty plugs. ⚫ Do not place flammable materials near electrical appliances. ⚫ No products should be used without certified safety labels. The Fire Department emphasized that while disasters cannot be completely avoided, risks and damages can be significantly reduced through continuous education, prevention, and regular drills. Moving forward, the Department will continue to promote the concepts of "Daily Disaster Prevention Education" and "Universal Disaster Prevention," combining school, family, and community resources to enhance the city's overall resilience and public safety.
