Ministry of the Interior Launches Obstacle-Free Building Evaluation
The kick-off ceremony for the “2010 Obstacle-Free Building Evaluation” was held at the Enjoy Restaurant on the first floor of City Hall on June 2. Both the Minister of the Interior Jiang Yi-huah and Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin attended the event to show their support.
The Enjoy Restaurant ranked first under the obstacle-free restaurant category in last year’s competition.
Following the ceremony, Hau and Jiang took control of their wheelchairs and experienced the convenience of obstacle-free facilities inside city hall. Maneuvering the wheelchairs, they left Enjoy Restaurant and wandered along the corridors until they reached their final destination – the disabled restroom.
Speaking before the journalists, Minister Jiang praised Taipei City Government’s efforts in ensuring the rights of disable individuals for convenient and unhindered movement. According to Jiang, Taipei is “always the nation’s leading city” in terms of constructing obstacle-free facilities.
Hau pointed out there are about 2,000 public buildings in the city, and 93 percent of these edifices are equipped with facilities to take care of visitors with special needs. The mayor also announced that the goal is to achieve the goal of 100-percent by the end of this year.
