To celebrate Women’s Day, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin presented rose bouquets to female janitors at Taipei City Hall on March 8.
Hau expressed his respect to the hard-working janitors, thanking them for doing their best to maintain a clean environment for city hall. Following the flower-giving event, the mayor expressed his well wishes to every woman inside the city hall via the internal broadcasting system, wishing them a “Happy Women’s Day”.
When asked about the central government’s intention of offering female workers one-year pregnancy leave, the mayor said he agrees with the proposal, and the city government would take the lead in implementing appropriate measures if the Legislative Yuan gives the green light.
He noted that faced with plummeting birth rate, motivating young couples to have babies should be the top priority for policy-makers. The governments should adopt active measures to offer women a more comfortable environment for taking care of their newborns.
The mayor also stressed that offering more advancement opportunities to female employees and offering specialized facilities – such as setting up nursery rooms and expanding the number of lady’s restroom – are major focus of his administration.
In addition, the city government is considering possible initiatives to boost birth rates. The packages will be announced in the near future.
