CHANGING FACES

Changes in women's position in society have clearly been of pivotal importance in the evolution of their societal roles. From the early 20 th century, the spread of universal education, the liberation of women's actions and the recognition of their rights have unlocked the severe restrictions imposed on women in the past. Particularly in the realm of the arts, women have produced remarkable new ideas and achievements. In addition to this structural transformation, the greater openness and fluidity resulting from contemporary globalization have infused women's art with increased vitality.
The panel discussion series and exhibition focuses on the accomplishments of Asia-Pacific women artists, ranging from writers, visual artists, action artists, filmmakers and dancers to academics. The project aims at representing women's artistic achievements in this region, as distinct from or surpassing those of Western women artists. The panel discussions and the exhibition are meant to reflect women's changing roles and ideas in the Asia-Pacific region.
