Baosheng Cultural Festival Kicks Off Amidst Fanfare
Mayor Hau Lung-bin attended the opening ceremony of the 2010 Baosheng Cultural Festival on April 26. He noted that the event is an important cultural ceremony of Taipei City, having won the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award in 2003 for the conservation of the temple structure.
The mayor pointed out that Datong District is one of the oldest neighborhoods of Taipei City, as well as a center of religion and culture. The district boasts of important cultural sites, including the Dalongtong Baoan Temple and Taipei Confucius Temple.
Citing the donation of a CT scanner to Puli Christian Hospital in Nantou County, he praised the governing board of the temple for its willingness to lend a helping hand to disadvantaged groups and local communities.
This year’s festival also marks the expansion of the event to include both Taipei’s Baoan Temple and temples revering Lord Baosheng in mainland China. Hau remarked that cross-strait exchange in the area of cultural and religious affairs is beneficial for both sides. As the mayor of this city, he welcomes the delegates from mainland China to take part in the event.
Dignitaries attending the ceremony include representatives from Xiamen, Fujian, Quanzhou, and Zhangzhou.
The 2010 Baosheng Cultural Festival will continue with a parade in the morning of April 27. The procession will consist of over six thousand individuals from around the island, including temple guardsman, drums, and Yi-Zhen (flower wagons and folklore performing squads).
