Young Baseball Champions Enjoy Meal at Steakhouse
To fulfill his side of the bargain, Mayor Hau Lung-bin invited the students of Chongqing Junior High School to a local steakhouse on August 24.
When he met the players at Tianmu Baseball Stadium during a practice session earlier this month, the mayor promised them that he will treat them to a steak meal if they bring back the championship trophy from Williamsport.
The team emerged as the winner of the 2010 Junior League Baseball World Series after defeating their rival from Texas in the championship game 9-1.
Hau recalled how hard the players practiced to prepare for the international tournament. The players from the city’s baseball team also took time off to help coach the team members. He joked that he has been preparing for the meal since the moment he made the promise, because he is sure the young athletes will do their best.
This is the first LLB championship title for Taiwan in 18 years. The mayor stressed that the city supports baseball through forming teams and scheduling physical education classes at local schools, as well as hiring professional coaches. In addition, the Sports Affairs Council and city hall subsidizes the expense of teams competing abroad. For those winning tournaments, there are also awards for the entire group as well as ones for individual players.
