During a meeting with International Baseball Federation (IBAF) President Riccardo Fraccari at city hall on May 25, Mayor Hau Lung-bin expressed the City’s interest in hosting the organization’s first little league world championship.
According to Fraccari, Taipei will likely face competition from Mexico over the bid for the inaugural tournament. However, he promised to throw his support behind Taipei, giving the City’s bid more advantage. The host city will be determined at an upcoming IBAF meeting in Puerto Rico scheduled for June this year.
Hau remarked that hosting the games would be a great present to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China.
He also cited Taipei’s experience in holding major international sports events, including the 2009 Summer Deaflympics, both the 2001 and 2007 Baseball World Cup, and the recent LA Dodgers exhibition matches in the country. The mayor said he is confident in Taipei’s ability to host the little league tournament.
Other dignitaries attending the meeting include member of the IBAF Executive Committee Tom Peng and Secretary-general Richard Lin of Chinese Taipei Baseball Association.
