Santo Domingo Mayor Visits Taipei City

Mayor Hau Lung-bin met with Roberto Salcedo – mayor of the Dominican Republic's capital city Santo Domingo – at Taipei City Hall on September 4. This is Salcedo’s first visit to the city.

Mayor Hau began by informing the visiting mayor on events taking place in the city. He indicated that Taipei City is one of the safest and most friendly cities in Asia, as well as a city boasting plenty of delicacies and great cuisines. The two mayors discussed issues such as city governance, urban renovation, and public security.

Salcedo pointed out that Santo Domingo was the first city to be founded in Latin America – not long after the discovery of the continent by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Despite its rich historical heritage and cultural assets, the communities of Santo Domingo are facing severe challenges stemming from security and social issues. In light of this, Mayor Salcedo exchanged views with Hau on effective ways in maintaining public security.

Hau noted that the average number of serious crimes in Taipei City each year was less than 20. In addition, the city government plans to install a citywide security camera system to strengthen public safety in the coming year.

On the differences between old and new communities, Hau remarked that Taipei also face a similar problem. However, he believes that urban renovation could help redevelopment efforts in the older neighborhoods of the city.

Thanking Taipei’s mayor for the warm welcome, Salcedo invited him to visit Santo Domigo. Hau said he looks forward to visiting the historical city if an opportunity presents itself in the near future.
