Mayor Joins Elementary School Students for Vegetarian Lunch

To promote the concept of reducing carbon emission with vegetarian diet, Mayor Hau Lung-bin joined students of Yong Ji Elementary School for a vegetarian meal on April 19.
Hau stressed that the amount of carbon emission could
reduce by 4,000 tones if every resident in the city switch to vegetarian meals once a week. The amount of greenhouse gases reduced would be equivalent to the amount processed by ten Daan Forest Park.
According to the mayor, 239 schools across the city are participating in the vegetarian lunch program. Among these institutions, 185 schools serve vegetarian lunches once a month, while 54 schools provide vegetarian meals once a week.
Taking into account the positive response from kids on the vegetarian menu, the mayor requested them to convince their parents to join the campaign.
In addition to lunch, the mayor also presided over a quiz game on environmental protection awareness and attended the birthday party for students who were born on Earth Day (April 22).
