Slow Tech Exhibition at MOCA

Slow Tech Exhibition at MOCA
The Museum of Contemporary Art is holding the Slow Tech Exhibition between June 24 and September 3. Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou noted that while Taipei is a hi-tech metropolis focused on “speed” and “being faster,” it often forgets the philosophy of “slowing down.” He noted that he himself didn’t realize this until he got older. With age, he came to realize the importance of “slowing down.” He hopes that visitors would understand how hi-tech could be used to illustrate the art of slowness after visiting the exhibition. Ma remarked that the society puts a lot of emphasis on “being fast” and “speed,” especially in the fast developing areas such as the Neihu Technology Park and Nangang Software Park. The parks together account for NT$2 trillion in business and in a matter of five years completed the wireless LAN layout for their area. However, the mayor recalled the poem “Drinking Wine – Part V” by ancient Chinese poet Tao Yuanming about the life in the countryside characterized by picking chrysanthemum and looking at the mountains. Also noting Thoreau’s Walden, which detailed the poet’s life of solitude for two years, Ma praised this kind of lifestyle as meaningful and substantial. Appreciation for this kind of life comes with age according to the mayor. The Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Sebastian Liao shared with the audience his philosophy on living – slow, happy, and simple. He hopes that in the midst of the city’s fast-paced lifestyle, people can take some time to slow down and enjoy art. The Slow Tech Exhibition is organized by the acclaimed curator Yuan Gong-ming. The exhibition assembles the works of 16 artists around the world in various formats, such as photography, sculpture, video installation, audio-visual installation, interactive installation, and optical kinetics installation. This event reflects on the issue of “life in acceleration” and ensures a veritable feast for the audience.
