Torch Lighting Ceremony Kicks off Student Sports Meet

After lighting the tournament torch, Mayor Hau Lung-bin announced the start of the 2010 Taipei City Schools Sports Meet at a press conference on January 20. He encouraged the young athletes to demonstrate good sportsmanship and teamwork during the games.
The mayor pointed out that all the participants are exceptional athletes of their schools. While competing for the top honor at the games, they should not forget about the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship.
He reminded the students that winning for their school is more important than personal accomplishments, and they should balance the pursuit of victory with humility.
Hau stressed that life is like a marathon, and there is no need to rush to the finishing line. It is common for runners to encounter obstacles and defeats along the way. However, he hopes that athletes will let setbacks fuel their determination, meeting the challenges with dignity and determination.
The 2010 Taipei City Schools Sports Meet will start on January 22 at the renovated Taipei Stadium. The five-day event is the first major sports competition to take place at the stadium following the 2009 Summer Deaflympics.
